Info

The bone list is a closed mailing list for members, alumni, and friends of trombone section of Cornell University (and Busky). Created in 1994 as a way to notify bones of practice changes, gigs, and happy-hours via e-mail, the bone list has exploded into an active discussion list for current bones and alumni. The list is subscribed to by people in such exotic locals as: California, New York, Boston, and of course, Amsterdam. Topics are pretty much everything under the sun. Rarely, if ever is the trombone discussed. All too Common topics include: Computers, Torch's Cafe, Stocks, Beer, Hockey, New England Sports, as well as the hot political topics of the day. The list recieves about 20-30 posts daily. Sometimes more, sometimes less, depending on the time of year.

Anyone is welcome to post to the list...hell, we'd be thrilled to hear from anyone in the outside world; simply send your message to: bone-L@cornell.edu Mail reaches many undergrads and alumni of the section. Currently about 50-70 people (one hidden)strong, a list of subscribers to bone-l can be obtained by utilizing the "review" command of the list processor (described below). Subscription to the list is closed. To request subscription to the list, email the list manager at bone-L-request@cornell.edu. If you are alumni, please state that you are and include your graduation year.

***INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE CLUELESS***

  • To subscribe, or to add a new subscription address, email the list manager at bone-L-request@cornell.edu.
  • To temporarily stop getting messages, send "SET BONE-L MAIL POSTPONE" to listproc@cornell.edu
  • To receive one message per day of all the day's messages, send "SET BONE-L MAIL DIGEST" to listproc@cornell.edu
  • To take yourself off of POSTPONE or DIGEST and resume normal message delivery, do one of the following:
    • send "SET BONE-L MAIL ACK" to listproc@cornell.edu, which will send you copies of your own messages.
    • send "SET BONE-L MAIL NOACK" to listproc@cornell.edu, which will NOT send you copies of your own messages.
  • To unsubscribe an address, send "UNSUBSCRIBE BONE-L" to listproc@cornell.edu from the account you wish to unsubcribe.

Commonly Used Commands

Since a lot of members of the bone-L community often can't find/forget/don't know how to use the most common commands to configure their subscription to the list, the following is some documentation provided by Cornell's list processor. So stop annoying the list-owner, get off your duff, and do it yourself! It's quick, easy, and relatively painless. HINT: the "HELP" and "HOW-TO" documents give you everything you wanted to know and more. All the list-owner should have to worry about is adding/changing subscription addresses.

Getting documentation
---------------------
For details on changing passwords and for a full description of all
features and commands of this mailing-list system, send mail to:
        listproc@cornell.edu
containing this single line of text:
          HELP

A document tailored specifically for Cornell mailing lists is also
available. It is called "How to Use Mailing Lists" (How To-61), and
may be accessed via a World Wide Web page:
     http://www.cit.cornell.edu/cit-pubs/email/using-lists.html

--------------------
Setting preferences
--------------------
Subscribers may select options to specify preferences to
interact with lists. To change these options, send the
following command via electronic mail to listproc@cornell.edu
(NOT to BONE-L@cornell.edu):

SET BONE-L MAIL mode

Where "mode" is one of the following five(5):

ACK All messages posted *including* messages they themselves post
                are sent to the subscriber

NOACK All messages posted **except** messages they themselves post
                are sent to the subscriber

DIGEST All messages are collected into one messages and sent out as
a digest in MIME format (new in listproc 8.2).
Some email programs see these as attachments.

DIGEST-NOMIME All messages are collected into one messages and sent out as
a digest in TEXT format (what listproc 7.2 did as DIGEST).
This should be seen as the body of the message by all
                email programs.

POSTPONE No messages are sent to the user. Also, no messages are
saved for the user for future delivery. You are still
subscribed to the list. This is useful if you plan to be
on vacation and don't want to accumulate lots of mail while
you are away. You will need to use the SET command again using
one of the above MODES in order to start receiving postings again.

Note that the meaning of DIGEST has changed slightly (ie be careful).
The listproc8.2 DIGEST-NOMIME is the same as the old listproc7.2 DIGEST
The listproc8.2 DIGEST sends the digest out in a MIME format, which is new.

-------------------------------------------
